An online mystery licence is not necessarily a meeting service. There are two preparations: the story materials and the way people will communicate. Work through both before describing the evening as ready.
The example in this edition
The Chocolate Bar Mystery is listed at $29.99, with an ideal group of eight to twenty and about ninety minutes as an estimate. It has ten speaking roles, so larger attendance does not mean a unique role for everyone. Documents can be used on screen, and an external meeting platform is needed. Its email delivery is not instant. S13
The page also markets twenty-plus participation. We preserve that as a confirmation condition rather than inventing an unlimited technical capacity. Our selector compares the stated ideal range and flags larger groups. It never equates a meeting platform’s capacity with the game’s participation design.
Agree what everyone is joining
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does every attendee want a unique speaking role? | A seat in the call is not the same as a distinct character. |
| Can each person privately read their material? | Screen sharing should not accidentally expose every role. |
| Does the chosen meeting account support the intended session? | The game purchase does not establish your conferencing entitlements. |
| Who follows the running instructions? | The ability to participate does not remove the organiser’s work. |
Do a practical audio and document-access check with non-spoiler material. Test it on the devices people will actually use. A document that is readable on your desktop may be inconvenient beside a call on somebody else’s phone. We have not measured the supplier game on those devices.
Choose a participation policy before the evening
Where some attendees share a role or watch, explain that before they commit. Do not advertise “everyone gets their own character” when the chosen arrangement cannot provide it. Keep sensitive information and spoilers out of invitations; the goal is clear expectations, not a preview of the solution.
For groups wanting cooperative puzzle-solving without character performance, use Two-player mystery games: a shared puzzle is not a dinner-party kit instead. A remote two-player communication puzzle is a different experience from a call with eight or more role players. An online delivery channel does not make those products substitutes.
Allow a buffer without inventing a new duration
Put the equipment check before the game’s scheduled start and avoid promising an exact finish. People may need a reconnection or time to read. This is organiser planning, not a vendor-tested accessibility or timing result. The listed ninety minutes remains an estimate, not a countdown enforced by this guide.
After the session
Keep any recordings, if made at all, private and consensual; a purchased game is not permission to publish its story files or full performance. Check the seller’s actual licence before repeating the session or using it in a charged event. S15
Read Can you replay a mystery? Separate the solution from the licence for those separate questions. For the initial purchase, A download can still arrive later: plan before inviting everyone gives a preparation sequence that starts before the access email arrives, without assuming that payment immediately makes the materials available.
