Do not buy a downloadable game on the assumption that every page can remain on a tablet. The file might be a reading aid, a private role sheet, or a physical puzzle component. First identify what the player is expected to do with it.
Three meanings of “digital”
| Format | What the screen does | Printer implication |
|---|---|---|
| Split-screen browser puzzle | Shows one player’s information | The Enchambered examples do not specify a printed mission. S02 · S03 · S04 · S05 |
| Paper/app escape game | Runs the audio, answer checks and countdown | Escape Team explicitly requires printing; pages are physically manipulated. S07 · S08 |
| Online role-based mystery | Carries meeting and character information | The Chocolate Bar Mystery supports on-screen documents; the conferencing service is separate. S13 |
The right question is not “does it come as a PDF?” It is “does anything need to be cut, folded, marked, privately distributed, or physically combined?” A file that opens successfully is not evidence that all of those actions can be performed on the same screen.
One screen can create two different problems
A couple sharing a monitor may accidentally see information intended for only one partner. A remote group may need to read a document while keeping the meeting visible. Write down who needs private access and who needs a common view. Do not solve privacy by projecting everyone’s character sheet into the call.
Enchambered’s two-player setup uses separate devices; being in the same room does not remove that distinction. For its paid entries, confirm the checkout conditions and access window before beginning. This guide has not tested phones, display scaling, or assistive technologies inside those games. Recommended printing is not the same as optional printing
The Reading of the Will describes some digital sharing as possible but recommends printed materials. We therefore mark a no-printer request as needing confirmation, rather than advertising it as a ready-made paperless experience. Its private-role distribution still has to work. S11
This difference appears in session-fit selector: required printing excludes the result when no printer is available; a documented no-print workflow can remain a candidate; a suggested workaround remains a condition to resolve. The selector does not silently turn uncertainty into a match.
A no-printer preparation card
- List the participants and the screens actually available to them.
- Open only the public, spoiler-safe instructions before the evening.
- Confirm document access, audio, charging and the ability to keep private material private.
- Do not start an expiring game key merely to see what happens.
- Keep a separate fallback activity rather than improvising unsupported puzzle adaptations.
Those steps are our preparation advice. They do not certify device compatibility or guarantee that a supplier service will be available. Read An online group mystery needs more than a shared screen for the larger online-party workflow and A download can still arrive later: plan before inviting everyone when your main constraint is having usable materials by a particular evening.
